Calorie Cownter is an iPhone app for tracking the food you eat. This policy explains what we collect, what we don't, and where your data actually lives. We've tried to keep it plain — if anything is unclear, email marco@sunnyorlando.dev.
The short version
- There is no account and no sign-in — not even for the AI features.
- Your food diary lives in your own iCloud, not on our servers.
- Your Apple Health data never leaves your phone.
- AI meal photos are analyzed and then not stored.
- There are no ads, and no analytics or tracking in the app.
No account, no sign-in
There is no sign-up, no sign-in, and no password anywhere in the Calorie Cownter app. It never asks for an email address or a name, and we never receive one. Open the app and start logging.
The AI features do need a way to tell one device apart from another, so we can count the free daily scans and know whether a subscription is active. Your device uses Apple's StoreKit to produce an anonymous identifier for this app (Apple calls it the app transaction ID), and our backend verifies it with Apple and stores it. That identifier is specific to this app — it isn't your Apple Account, it doesn't tell us who you are, and it can't be used to look you up anywhere else. It's the only thing we store about you.
AI meal scanning
When you scan a meal by photo or by typing a description, that photo or text is sent to Calorie Cownter's backend server, which forwards it to a third-party AI provider (Anthropic / Claude) to estimate the calories and macros.
The image is processed transiently to generate an estimate. It is not stored on our server or kept by us after the analysis is returned to your phone.
Barcode scanning
When you scan a barcode, the barcode number is sent to our backend and looked up in the Open Food Facts public database. No account is needed and no AI is involved.
Subscriptions
Calorie Cownter Pro, the optional subscription for higher daily AI limits, is sold and managed entirely by Apple / StoreKit through RevenueCat. Our backend receives subscription status events keyed to the same anonymous app transaction ID described above, so we know whether a subscription is active. No payment or card details ever reach us.
Usage logging
To enforce the free daily AI limit and keep the service running, our backend keeps a minimal per-scan usage record: counts, the AI model used, token counts, an estimated cost, timing, your app version, and OS version. This ledger is about usage — it does not contain your food diary and does not contain the image you scanned.
What stays on your device / in your iCloud
- Your entire food diary — everything you log is stored on your device and synced through your private iCloud database, across your own devices only. We have no access to it.
- All Apple Health data — if you connect Apple Health, those values stay on your phone. The app only keeps a local "connected" flag; no Health values are sent anywhere.
No ads or tracking
Calorie Cownter contains no advertising, no ad networks, and no third-party analytics or tracking SDKs. Nothing you log is ever measured or reported.
This website (caloriecownter.com) is the one exception, and a small one. It uses Umami to count page views so we can tell whether anyone is finding the site. Umami sets no cookies, stores no personal data, and can't follow you to other sites. We see totals such as how many people opened a page and which country they were in, never who you are. It runs only on this website, never in the app.
The waitlist (this website only)
Before launch, this website offers a waitlist form so we can tell you when the app is out. It's hosted on Google Forms, and if you fill it in you're giving us your email address on purpose. We use it for that one announcement and nothing else — no marketing lists, no sharing, no selling. It has no connection to the app, which still never asks who you are.
Children
Calorie Cownter is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from them.

If this policy changes, we'll update this page and the "last updated" date above.
