Calorie Cownter is an iPhone app for tracking the food you eat. This policy explains what we collect, what we don't, and where your data actually lives. We've tried to keep it plain — if anything is unclear, email marco@sunnyorlando.dev.
The short version
- You can use most of the app with no account at all.
- Your food diary lives in your own iCloud, not on our servers.
- Your Apple Health data never leaves your phone.
- AI meal photos are analyzed and then not stored.
- There are no ads, and no analytics or tracking in the app.
Accounts (optional)
You don't need an account to log food, scan barcodes, or connect Apple Health. An account is only required to use the AI meal-scanning feature.
If you choose to use AI, you sign in with Sign in with Apple — there is no password. When you do, our backend stores the stable Apple user identifier Apple gives us (so we can recognize you and enforce the free daily limit). If Apple provides them on your first sign-in, we also store your email address (which may be an Apple private-relay address you can revoke at any time) and your name. That's it.
AI meal scanning
When you scan a meal by photo or by typing a description, that photo or text is sent to Calorie Cownter's backend server, which forwards it to a third-party AI provider (Anthropic / Claude) to estimate the calories and macros.
The image is processed transiently to generate an estimate. It is not stored on our server or kept by us after the analysis is returned to your phone.
Barcode scanning
When you scan a barcode, the barcode number is sent to our backend and looked up in the Open Food Facts public database. No account is needed and no AI is involved.
Subscriptions
Any subscription (for example, unlimited AI scans, coming soon) is handled entirely by Apple / StoreKit through RevenueCat. Our backend receives subscription status events keyed to your Apple identifier so we know whether your subscription is active. No payment or card details ever reach us.
Usage logging
To enforce the free daily AI limit and keep the service running, our backend keeps a minimal per-scan usage record: counts, the AI model used, token counts, an estimated cost, timing, your app version, and OS version. This ledger is about usage — it does not contain your food diary and does not contain the image you scanned.
What stays on your device / in your iCloud
- Your entire food diary — everything you log is stored on your device and synced through your private iCloud database, across your own devices only. We have no access to it.
- All Apple Health data — if you connect Apple Health, those values stay on your phone. The app only keeps a local "connected" flag; no Health values are sent anywhere.
No ads or tracking
Calorie Cownter contains no advertising, no ad networks, and no third-party analytics or tracking SDKs. Nothing you log is ever measured or reported.
This website (caloriecownter.com) is the one exception, and a small one. It uses Umami to count page views so we can tell whether anyone is finding the site. Umami sets no cookies, stores no personal data, and can't follow you to other sites. We see totals such as how many people opened a page and which country they were in, never who you are. It runs only on this website, never in the app.
Children
Calorie Cownter is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from them.
